Joan has almost 20 years experience in support work, the majority as a frontline support worker. She has supported men and women experiencing substance addiction, mental and physical health issues, homelessness and in contact with the Criminal Justice System; including working in HMP New Hall as a housing support worker; to help women find safe, suitable accommodation before and on release.
Joan has worked in supported housing with women experiencing multiple challenges including domestic abuse, mental health issues, periods of homelessness and women involved in sex work. Most of the past 12 years was with Basis in Leeds where she held a variety of roles including outreach worker, Sexual Violence support worker, Team Leader and, during the pandemic- Interim Service Delivery Manager. Joan led on a 15 month pilot scheme of the Housing First project in 2016 and was instrumental in securing funding for a further 3 years. In November 2021, Joan left to focus on delivering training, a part of her roles she had always enjoyed, but she still works occasional sessions in an Approved Premises hostel for women in West Yorkshire.
